Not Giving In, Not Giving Up: A Declaration In The Face Of Adversity

In a scene from one of my favorite movies, The Thing Called Love the leading lady, Miranda, and her love interest, James venture to the top of a Nashville building to boldly shout “Look out music city, cause I’m here now and I ain't never leaving!”.

It’s one of my favorite scenes in the movie, but let's be honest, I’ve been pretty much obsessed with every scene in this movie since it came out in 1993. So it should come as no surprise that among my list of things to do after moving to Nashville was to make a rooftop declaration of my own. As silly as it seems, the symbolism and significance of that declaration was really important to me, so I did it! High above downtown Nashville, I yelled at the top of my lungs for all to hear! (video proof here)

Nashville is a town practically bursting at the seams with creativity and talent. There’s an energy here that vibrates the hopes and aspirations of all the brave souls who have answered the call of their dreams here in music city. But despite all of that creative energy, chasing a dream in Nashville regularly proves the truth in the old adage that nothing worth having comes easy. In fact, as I write this inaugural blog post, I’m staring down a mountain of bills so daunting it makes Kilimanjaro look like a molehill.

Now don’t get me wrong, I knew that packing up and moving cross country would come with its own set of challenges. No one said it would be easy and I certainly didn’t expect a cakewalk, but it takes a strong resolve not to give in to fear in the face of adversity.

When everything is on the line for the sake of a dream, you’re forced to make friends with uncertainty. I don’t know where I’ll find the money to pay the next round of bills or how I’ll stretch twenty bucks for a weeks worth of gas (nothing strikes terror in me quite like seeing that little orange gas light illuminated), but what I do know is that I didn’t come all this way to give in and I’m not giving up.

Like the movie poster says "Stand by your dream." I’m here to see my dream through and I’m gonna shout it from the rooftops! So look out music city, cause I’m here now and I ain't never leaving!

Thanks for reading! I’ll see ya at the Opry!
